[PRT]int [S]creen [S]mall
-------------------------
Although the printer should be the easiest peripheral to use,
printers seem to cause the greatest headache for the beginner
as well as the expert practitioner.
Oddly enough one request seems to surface time after time, the
ability to print in compressed mode. Although this can easily
be accomplished at the source code stage, it is often forgotten
or omitted due to its 'hardware dependence'.
Many users who dive into a quick BASIC program to re-set the
printer default soon find either it's too complicated for them
or the software they wish to use in compressed mode promptly
resets the printer prior to execution. (For example compiled
basic).
Well dispair no longer users, compressed mode at any time is
here!!!
***PRTSM.COM is a program which when run establishes itself as
the always resident print screen interrupt. Always there when
you need it ***PRTSM.COM resets the designated printer to......
COMPRESSED MODE thats 17CPI if your printer supports it......
12CPI if it does'nt.
I have set up four ***PRTSM's as follows :
OKIPRTSM.COM - FOR OKIDATA PRINTERS
EPSPRTSM.COM - FOR EPSON PRINTERS
NECPRTSM.COM - FOR NEC PRINTERS
TOSPRTSM.COM - FOR TOSHIBA PRINTERS.
If your printer type does not show here, the process of conversion
for any other printer requiring ESCAPE + CODE format can easily
be made via DOS's DEBUG facility. (See Appendix)
To use ***PRTSM.COM, either place execution of the program in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file or simply type in the command when required.
To envoke the compressed mode you are (alas) forced to do a print
screen [SHIFT + PrtSc]. Although this can sometimes be annoying
it's a small price for those who need the facility.
To drop the compressed print mode simply on/off your printer.
Yes I did think to toggle this via ***PRTSM but felt that it
was better to on/off the printer than wait out another print
screen (Oh well, even the best solutions aren't perfect).
Upon on/offing the printer, you will be back into the default
mode until another print screen is issued [ SHIFT + PrtSC ].
***PRTSM.COM has been tested on the above printers under
DOS 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0. And has worked on a COMPAQ, IBM PC,
IBM XT and even an IBM AT.
The program is offered free of charge as PUBLIC DOMAIN software,
provided that the copyright notice and accompanying documentation
are not altered or omitted.
Source code is in ASSEMBLER and is available upon request.
APPENDIX
--------
***PRTSM.COM has been written to easily facilitate changes in
order to be used by a variety of available printers.
To alter PRTSM you will need a copy of the program, DOS's
DEBUG utility and a manual for the intended printer target.
Follow these instructions and customize PRTSM for your very
own!!!
1. Locate in your printer manual the ESCAPE code sequence for
setting the printer into the required mode.
2. Translate the decimal code to it's hex code equivilent.
3. DEBUG ***PRTSM.COM (where *** is the first three characters
of the driver you currently have).
4. E 0144 XX (where XX is the hex code setting reqd).
5. N ***PRTSM.COM (where *** is the first three characters
in the name of the intended printer)
6. W
7. Q
You should now be back in DOS with your newly modified ***PRTSM.COM
ready for action. Simply follow the above user procedures to use
your new print screen generator.
